. >> mr. romney has diminishing opportunities to turn this race around. is there greater importance on the first debate thanks say, the second and third. does he have to get off on a really strong footing here? >> i expect more people will watch the first debate than the second or third, unless there's some great inflection point in the first debate that draws people's attentions to the second and third debate. the challenge for mitt romney going into this debate is not necessarily to get a hit in on barack obama, but better to communicate with the public why he's best positioned to help them. i think he's had some trouble with that throughout the campaign. i think the video that came out with him talking about 47% of the people being somewhat dependent upon the government, i think that hurt his ability to connect and say to folks i want to be president for all of america. i think he's got an opportunity in this first debate to communicate directly with the public. i won't give him advice, but i would just say i think that's a challenge for him right now.

mrs. romney, that's not helping. you better finish the thought. >> i have all the confidence in the world in his ability, in his decisiveness, in his leadership skills, in his understanding of the economy, in his understanding of what's missing right now in the economy, you know, the pieces that are missing to get this jump started. so for me i think it would be the emotional part of it. >> right. he's capable, decisive, and emotionally troubled? well, that is an october surprise. let's get right to our panel this afternoon. with us from washington, msnbc political analyst karen finney, who is a democratic strategist. also julian epstein, who is a democratic strategist, and here in new york msnbc political analyst professor michael eric dyson. professor dyson, mitt romney's wife says she's concerned about his mental health. paul ryan says he's inarticulate. if he can't think straight and he can't speak properly, is mitt romney george bush in disguise? >> i'll tell what you. i want to give you the baseline, i don't ha

do you think mr. romney should put this foreign policy leadership quotient or lack thereof into wednesday night's debate. i mean there's economic policy quotient that's going to be very important on leadership, what about foreign policy? >> yeah i think the lack of leadership in foreign policy shows itself in domestic policy. the president needs to be the president. he needs to be able to guide the nation, you can't do one without the other. if he has a policy of appeasement in foreign policy, that's going to bleed over into domestic policy. i would think that it's a very legitimate issue to raise, the whole issue of presidential leadership, the commander in chief and trying to lead the nation during very desperate economic times. if you're not a courageous commander in chief, you're not going to be able to generate confidence in the country to follow you on your economic domestic policy. >> i think that paul ryan is right, i think the security apparatus, at least as regards the middle east, the intel

the romney thesis is that the economy was getting worse. it was obama's fault, and romney was mr. fix-it. and in each of those tenets it seemed to me they have gone out the window. i think obama will start asking where is the beef. the numbers are very clear about the economic turnaround since he's been president. he has an economic jobs recovery act now which by everybody's reckoning would create somewhere between 1 million and 2 million jobs. on the other hand, you have romney who has no economic plan whatsoever other than to say i want to cut taxes below the 15% ofg dp that they are right now, and then the other night he says, well, i don't want to actually cut the actual tax rate, i want to cut rates and then i want to increase deductions and give us effectively the same amount of taxes coming into the economy which leaves him with an unutterly incoherent record. with romney you have nothing and i think the message you will start hearing next week is going back to that old mondale commercial, where is the beef, show us the beef, because there ain't none there. >> john, before
